What Happens on Exam Day
Registration
Arrive at the hospital and go to the overseas medical desk. Submit your passport, NID, photos, and BMET registration printout. Pay the fee if not pre-paid. You will receive a token number.
Blood Collection
A technician will draw blood samples for HIV, Hepatitis B/C, Syphilis, CBC, and blood glucose tests. This takes about 5 minutes.
Urine Sample
You will be given a container for a urine sample. This tests for drugs, infections, and kidney function.
Chest X-ray
A PA (posteroanterior) chest X-ray to check for tuberculosis and other lung conditions. Remove metal jewelry and wear the gown provided.
Physical Examination
A doctor will check your blood pressure, heart rate, vision, hearing, and overall physical condition. They will ask about your medical history and current medications.
Collect Results
Results are typically ready in 2-3 working days. Return to collect your medical fitness certificate. Some hospitals offer SMS notification when results are ready.
What If You Fail the Medical Exam?
Failing does not always mean your overseas employment is over. The outcome depends on the condition found.
Treatable Conditions
If you are found with a treatable condition (such as certain infections, high blood pressure, or dental issues), you can get treatment and re-test after recovery. The hospital will advise on the waiting period, usually 2-4 weeks.
Temporary Conditions
Some results can be temporarily abnormal due to recent illness, medication, or fasting issues. You may be asked to re-test specific items after 1-2 weeks. This does not count as a failure.
Disqualifying Conditions
HIV positive, active tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B/C are typically disqualifying for overseas employment medical clearance. However, some countries have different rules. Consult with the medical center and your employer about your specific destination country.
Re-Test Process
If you need a re-test, you typically pay only for the specific tests being repeated, not the full exam fee. Keep your original paperwork and return to the SAME hospital for the re-test.
Additional Medical Requirements by European Country
Some European countries require additional medical checks beyond the BMET standard. Check your destination country's requirements.
| Country | Additional Requirements | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | TB screening may be required separately | Depends on the Bundesland (state) |
| Poland | Standard BMET medical usually sufficient | Employer may request additional tests |
| Italy | TB test and vaccination record | Chest X-ray from BMET usually accepted |
| Romania | Standard BMET medical usually sufficient | Some employers require specific fitness tests |
| Czech Republic | Occupational health certificate may be needed | Must be repeated after arrival in some cases |
| Portugal | Standard BMET medical usually sufficient | SEF may require local medical after arrival |
| Hungary | Occupational health exam after arrival | BMET certificate for visa, local exam for work |
| Croatia | Standard BMET medical for visa | Employer arranges local exam after arrival |
Recommended Vaccinations for Europe
While not all are mandatory, having these vaccinations up to date will strengthen your medical profile and prevent issues at arrival.
COVID-19
Fully vaccinated (2 doses minimum)
Most countries accept WHO-approved vaccines
Hepatitis B
3-dose series if not immune
Highly recommended for all workers
Tetanus/Diphtheria
Booster if last dose was 10+ years ago
Required for construction workers
MMR
Measles, Mumps, Rubella
Check childhood vaccination record
Influenza
Annual flu shot
Recommended, especially for winter arrivals
Typhoid
If not previously vaccinated
Some countries check for this
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Going to a non-approved hospital
Your local hospital or family doctor cannot issue the BMET medical certificate. Only approved centers are accepted. Check this page for the list.
Not fasting before the exam
Blood glucose and some other tests require 8-12 hours of fasting. Eating before the exam can give false results and require a costly re-test.
Forgetting original documents
Photocopies are not accepted. Bring your original passport, NID, and BMET registration. No originals = no exam that day.
Waiting until the last week
Results take 2-3 days, and if you need a re-test, add another 1-2 weeks. Start the medical at least 3-4 weeks before your planned departure.
Hiding medical conditions
If you have a known condition and hide it, the blood tests will find it anyway. Disclose upfront so the doctor can advise properly. Hiding a condition and getting caught disqualifies you.
Paying brokers for medical
Some brokers charge 10,000-15,000 BDT for the medical that costs 3,000-5,000 BDT officially. Go directly to the approved hospital yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
The medical fitness certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. If your departure is delayed beyond 6 months, you will need a new medical exam.
Yes. You can go to any BMET-approved hospital regardless of where you live. You do not need to go to a hospital in your home district.
The exam itself takes 2-4 hours (depending on how crowded the hospital is). Arrive early in the morning. Results are available in 2-3 working days.
Bring a list of all medications you take and inform the examining doctor. Some medications (like blood pressure medication) should be taken as normal. Others may need to be paused. Ask the hospital when you schedule your appointment.
BMET medical clearance is specifically for employment. Students typically need a different medical certificate from any registered hospital. Check your university or visa requirements.
Most approved hospitals operate Sunday to Thursday. Some Dhaka centers are open on Saturdays. Check with the specific hospital before visiting.
Contact the hospital where you were examined. They keep records and can issue a duplicate certificate. Bring your passport and original receipt. There may be a small fee for the duplicate.
The medical exam is one step in the BMET process. See our BMET Registration Guide for the full process. After your medical is complete, check the Pre-Departure Checklist to make sure everything is ready.
