Overview

Slovakia is a small but highly industrialized country in Central Europe that joined the EU in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2009. The country has the highest per-capita car production in the world, with Volkswagen, Kia, Stellantis, and Jaguar Land Rover all operating major plants. Bratislava sits on the Danube River, just 60 km from Vienna, making it a strategic location. Slovakia offers a lower cost of living than its neighbors while maintaining EU standards of worker protection.

Labor Laws

Slovak labor law is codified in the Labour Code (Zakonnik prace). The standard working week is 40 hours, reducible in specific conditions. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks paid annual leave, increasing to 5 weeks for employees aged 33 and over. Overtime is limited to 150 hours per year and compensated at a minimum 25% premium. Night work receives a 40% premium and weekend work a 50% premium. Employers must provide written employment contracts before the start of work. The probation period is a maximum of 3 months. Social insurance covers health, pension, sickness, accident, and unemployment benefits.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: The Slovak employer posts the vacancy at the local Office of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family for a minimum of 20 working days. Step 2: If no suitable local or EU candidate is found, the employer supports a work permit application. Step 3: The worker applies for a Single Permit (combined residence and work permit) at the Slovak Embassy. Step 4: The application is processed jointly by the immigration police and labor office, typically taking 30-90 days. Step 5: Upon approval, the worker collects the visa and travels to Slovakia. Step 6: The worker registers at the Foreign Police within 3 business days of arrival and receives a residence card.
