Overview

Portugal is a welcoming Southern European nation with a growing economy driven by tourism, technology, construction, and agriculture. The country has become increasingly popular with foreign workers due to its warm climate, affordable cost of living, and friendly immigration policies. Portugal has introduced simplified work permit processes and a Job Seeker Visa, making it one of the most accessible EU countries for Bangladeshi workers.

Labor Laws

Standard working hours are 40 per week with a maximum of 8 hours per day. Overtime is paid at 125% for the first hour and 137.5% thereafter on weekdays, and 150% on holidays. Employees receive 22 working days of vacation plus 13 public holidays. Portugal provides Christmas and vacation bonuses (each equal to one month's salary). Sick leave is paid at 55-75% of salary through social security. Notice periods range from 15 to 75 days. Portuguese labor law provides reasonable worker protections. All workers, including foreigners, are covered by social security and entitled to the national health service.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: Portugal offers a Job Seeker Visa allowing you to enter and search for work for up to 120 days. Step 2: Alternatively, obtain a job offer from a Portuguese employer. Step 3: The employer registers the job at IEFP (employment institute) if a labor market test is required. Step 4: Apply for a work visa at the Portuguese Embassy or consulate (via VFS Global in Dhaka). Step 5: Submit passport, criminal record, medical certificate, and proof of accommodation. Step 6: Upon arrival, schedule an appointment at SEF/AIMA to obtain your residence permit. Step 7: After 5 years of legal residence, apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship.

Lisbon apartments cost €700-1,200/month for one bedroom, having risen sharply due to tourism and expat demand. Porto is 15-20% cheaper. Smaller cities like Braga or Coimbra offer rents of €400-600. Groceries cost €200-280/month. Monthly transport passes cost €30-40 (Navegante pass). Utilities average €100-160/month. Portugal offers excellent value compared to Northern Europe. A single person needs approximately €1,100-1,800/month.

Climate & Weather

Portugal has one of the mildest climates in Europe — Mediterranean in the south (Algarve) with 300+ days of sunshine, warm summers (25-35°C), and mild winters (8-15°C). The north is cooler and rainier. Lisbon enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Future Outlook

Portugal's economy has been growing steadily, with tourism, tech, and renewable energy leading the way. Lisbon and Porto have become major tech hubs with numerous startups and international companies. The country needs workers in construction (housing crisis), hospitality, agriculture, and healthcare. Portugal's Golden Visa program and Digital Nomad Visa have attracted significant international investment and talent. The government is actively promoting legal immigration to address demographic challenges.
