Overview

Labor Laws

Standard working hours are 40 per week with a maximum of 8 hours per day. Overtime is paid at 125% for the first hour and 137.5% thereafter on weekdays, and 150% on holidays. Employees receive 22 working days of vacation plus 13 public holidays. Portugal provides Christmas and vacation bonuses (each equal to one month's salary). Sick leave is paid at 55-75% of salary through social security. Notice periods range from 15 to 75 days. Portuguese labor law provides reasonable worker protections. All workers, including foreigners, are covered by social security and entitled to the national health service.

Work Permit Process

Step 1: Portugal offers a Job Seeker Visa allowing you to enter and search for work for up to 120 days. Step 2: Alternatively, obtain a job offer from a Portuguese employer. Step 3: The employer registers the job at IEFP (employment institute) if a labor market test is required. Step 4: Apply for a work visa at the Portuguese Embassy or consulate (via VFS Global in Dhaka). Step 5: Submit passport, criminal record, medical certificate, and proof of accommodation. Step 6: Upon arrival, schedule an appointment at SEF/AIMA to obtain your residence permit. Step 7: After 5 years of legal residence, apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship.
