Overview

Lithuania is the largest and most populous of the three Baltic states, a member of the EU and eurozone since 2015. The country has transformed into a dynamic economy with strong fintech, laser technology, and logistics sectors. Vilnius has become a notable European tech hub, hosting numerous startups and shared service centers. Lithuania faces significant labor shortages due to emigration and an aging population, creating opportunities for foreign workers in manufacturing, transport, and services.

Labor Laws

Lithuanian labor law is governed by the Labour Code (Darbo kodeksas), substantially reformed in 2017. The standard working week is 40 hours with a maximum of 12 hours per day including overtime. Employees receive a minimum of 20 working days of paid annual leave. Overtime is limited to 8 hours per week on average over 4 months and compensated at 150% of the regular rate. Night work receives a 50% premium and weekend work a 100% premium. Employment contracts must be in writing and registered electronically. The probation period is a maximum of 3 months. Social insurance covers pensions, health, sickness, maternity, and unemployment. Lithuania allows flexible working arrangements including remote work.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: The Lithuanian employer publishes the vacancy at the Employment Service (Uztikrintumo tarnyba) for at least 14 days. Step 2: If no suitable Lithuanian or EU candidate is found, the employer applies for a work permit. Step 3: The Employment Service issues the work permit within 14 days. Step 4: The worker applies for a national visa (D-type) at the Lithuanian Embassy. Step 5: Upon arrival, the worker applies for a temporary residence permit at the Migration Department within 7 days. Step 6: The residence permit is issued for 1-2 years and renewable. Lithuania has a simplified procedure for workers in shortage occupations listed by the government.

The country has simplified its work permit procedures and regularly updates its shortage occupation list. The fintech and logistics sectors are growing rapidly, creating diverse job opportunities. With a relatively low cost of living for the eurozone, workers can save and remit effectively. The Bangladeshi community is small but growing.
