Overview

Latvia is a Baltic state on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, a member of the EU since 2004 and the eurozone since 2014. Riga, the capital, is the largest city in the Baltic states and a significant port and logistics center. The economy is driven by services, manufacturing, timber products, and food processing. Latvia faces demographic challenges with population decline and labor shortages, particularly in construction, manufacturing, and transport, creating opportunities for foreign workers.

Labor Laws

Latvian labor law is governed by the Labour Law (Darba likums). The standard working week is 40 hours with a maximum of 8 hours per day. Employees receive a minimum of 4 calendar weeks (20 working days) of paid annual leave. Overtime may not exceed 8 hours per week on average over a 4-month reference period and is compensated at 200% of the regular rate. Night work receives a 150% premium. Employment contracts must be in writing before the first day of work. The probation period is a maximum of 3 months. Social insurance covers pensions, unemployment, disability, maternity, and sickness. Employers must ensure occupational safety standards and provide necessary protective equipment.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: The Latvian employer registers the vacancy at the State Employment Agency for at least 1 month. Step 2: If no suitable local or EU candidate is found, the employer issues an invitation for the foreign worker at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA). Step 3: The worker applies for a long-stay visa at the Latvian Embassy. Step 4: Upon arrival, the worker applies for a temporary residence permit at OCMA, which is issued for up to 5 years (usually 1-2 years initially). Step 5: The residence permit serves as a work permit. Step 6: The worker registers their address at the local municipality. Latvia offers expedited processing for workers in shortage occupations.

A public transport monthly pass in Riga costs 30 EUR. Utilities including heating and internet cost about 100-180 EUR per month. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs 7-12 EUR. A single worker can live on approximately 800-1,100 EUR per month.

Climate & Weather

Latvia has a maritime-influenced continental climate with mild summers averaging 17-22°C and cold, damp winters around -3°C to -7°C. Coastal Riga tends to be milder than inland regions. Snowfall is common from November to March, and the country experiences short daylight hours in winter.

Future Outlook

Latvia presents modest but growing opportunities for Bangladeshi workers, particularly in construction, manufacturing, timber processing, and transport. As an EU and eurozone member, it offers the security of European labor standards and the ability to earn in euros. The cost of living is among the lowest in the eurozone, enabling reasonable savings. However, the small economy limits the number of available positions, and the cold climate requires adjustment.
