Overview

The Czech Republic is one of the most industrialized and prosperous economies in Central Europe, with the lowest unemployment rate in the EU. The country is a major automotive manufacturing hub, home to Skoda Auto, and has a strong engineering and electronics sector. Prague is a vibrant capital attracting international businesses and tourists alike. The Czech Republic actively seeks foreign workers to fill persistent labor shortages in manufacturing and services.

Labor Laws

Czech labor law is governed by the Labour Code (Zakonik prace). The standard working week is 40 hours, with overtime capped at 8 hours per week on average. Employees receive a minimum of 4 weeks (20 working days) of paid annual leave. Overtime must be compensated with a 25% premium or time off in lieu. Probation periods may last up to 3 months for regular employees and 6 months for managers. Employers must provide safe working conditions and personal protective equipment. Social and health insurance contributions are mandatory. Fixed-term contracts may be renewed up to twice, for a maximum total of 3 years.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: The Czech employer registers the job vacancy at the Labour Office for at least 30 days. Step 2: The employer files a work permit application on behalf of the worker at the regional Labour Office branch. Step 3: Upon approval, the worker applies for an Employee Card (long-term residence for employment) at the Czech Embassy in Dhaka. Step 4: Biometric data is collected at the embassy. Step 5: The worker enters the Czech Republic and registers at the Foreign Police within 3 days. Step 6: The Employee Card is issued, valid for up to 2 years and renewable. Workers may also apply through the Government-to-Government recruitment scheme if available.
