Overview

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Southeast European country with a complex political structure consisting of two entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska. The country has made significant progress since the 1990s conflict, rebuilding its infrastructure and economy. Sarajevo, the capital, is known for its rich multicultural heritage where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern European influences converge. Bosnia was granted EU candidate status in 2022, marking a milestone in its European integration path.

Labor Laws

The standard working week is 40 hours across both entities, with overtime limited to 8 hours per week. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 working days of paid annual leave per year. Labor laws differ slightly between the two entities but generally provide similar protections. Maternity leave is 12 months, with the first 6 months at full pay in the Federation entity. Workers have the right to organize and join trade unions, and collective bargaining is protected by law. The minimum notice period is 14 days, extending up to 3 months for longer tenures. Employers must contribute to pension, health, and unemployment insurance funds. Discrimination in employment based on gender, religion, or ethnicity is prohibited.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: Secure a job offer from a Bosnian employer who applies for a work permit at the relevant entity's employment bureau. Step 2: The employer must prove through a labor market test that no suitable local candidate is available. Step 3: Required documents: valid passport, employment contract, proof of professional qualifications (translated and notarized), medical certificate, and police clearance from Bangladesh. Step 4: Apply for a visa at the nearest Bosnian embassy or consulate. There is no Bosnian embassy in Bangladesh; apply through the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in New Delhi, India. Step 5: Work permits are issued for the duration of the employment contract, up to one year. Step 6: Upon arrival, register with local police within 48 hours. Step 7: Obtain a temporary residence card from the Service for Foreigners' Affairs. Step 8: Work permits can be renewed; after 5 years of continuous residence, permanent residence may be granted.

The country has growing manufacturing, energy, and construction sectors with increasing demand for skilled and semi-skilled labor. While not yet an EU member, its candidate status means improving regulatory standards and growing foreign investment. Bangladeshi workers can find opportunities in construction, manufacturing, and service industries, though the permit process requires navigating the country's dual-entity structure.
