Overview

Albania is a Southeast European country on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, experiencing rapid economic growth and EU integration progress after receiving EU candidate status in 2014. The economy has been transforming from agriculture-based to services-oriented, with tourism emerging as a major growth driver thanks to the country's stunning coastline and UNESCO heritage sites. Tirana, the vibrant capital, has undergone remarkable urban renewal and now hosts a growing tech and outsourcing scene. Albania began EU accession negotiations in 2022, accelerating reforms in governance and judiciary.

Labor Laws

The standard working week in Albania is 40 hours, with overtime compensated at 125% for weekdays and 150% for weekends and holidays. Employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 working days of paid annual leave per year, increasing to 25 days for those under 18. Maternity leave is 365 days, with 80% pay for the first 150 days and 50% thereafter. Workers have the constitutional right to form and join trade unions. The minimum notice period is one month for termination, increasing with tenure. Employers must contribute to social insurance (15% employer, 9.5% employee) covering pension, health, and unemployment. Night work is restricted and requires additional compensation. Labor inspections are conducted by the State Labour Inspectorate.

Work Permit Process

1
Step 1: Obtain a job offer from an Albanian employer who submits a work permit application to the National Agency for Employment and Skills (AKPA). Step 2: The employer must prove that the position cannot be filled locally through a labor market test. Step 3: Required documents: valid passport, employment contract, educational qualifications (apostilled and translated into Albanian), medical certificate, and criminal record from Bangladesh. Step 4: Apply for a Type D visa at the nearest Albanian embassy or consulate. There is no Albanian embassy in Bangladesh; apply through the Albanian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. Step 5: The work permit is issued for the duration of the employment contract, up to two years. Step 6: Upon arrival, apply for a residence permit at the local border and migration police within 30 days. Step 7: Work permits are renewable. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, permanent residence may be applied for. Step 8: Family reunification is possible after one year of legal residence.
